Letter Rack
Seven tiles. Find every word you can.
Letter Rack gives everyone the same seven letter tiles and sixty seconds to spell as many words as they can. Each player taps tiles on their own phone, and nobody sees anyone else's words until the results. The rack is always built from a real seven-letter word, which stays hidden until the end.
Objective
Everyone gets the same seven letter tiles. Spell as many real words as you can before the timer runs out.
How to play
- Tap tiles (or type) to spell a word of 3 or more letters, using each tile once, then press Send.
- A word counts only if it is in the dictionary and made from your tiles. Find as many as you like.
- While the clock runs you only see how many words the others have found, never the words.
- When time is up the hidden 7-letter word is revealed, with every player's words.
Scoring
Each letter is worth points, and rarer letters score more. A word only you found counts double, and using all seven tiles adds 10. The best score takes 5 game points, then 3, then 2; anyone else who found a word gets 1.
Example round
- The rack this round is P, L, A, N, E, T, S, built from PLANETS.
- Ana spells PLANETS with all seven tiles, earning the +10 bonus. Nobody else finds it, so it's unique too. She also finds PLANET and PASTE.
- Ben spells PLANET, PANTS and LANES. Cleo spells PLANET, PLATE and SLATE. Dan spells PLANET, PANEL and PANTS.
- PLANET is found by all four players, so it gets no star. PANTS is shared by Ben and Dan. Every other word they found is unique and gets a star.
- When time runs out, the results show each player's words, plus any valid words nobody spelled, such as STEAL. Ana tops the round and takes 5 placement points on the session scoreboard. Ben gets 3, Cleo gets 2, and Dan, in fourth, still earns 1 for finding words.
Strategy tips
- Look for the full seven-tile word early. It earns the +10 bonus, so it's worth hunting before you settle for smaller words.
- Once you've found the obvious plurals, try less common forms like PLEAT or SPATE. Words nobody else finds score double.
- You can't see rivals' words, but the running totals show whether you're keeping pace. If you're behind, lean toward unusual words.
- Keep tapping. A word you're sure of is worth more banked now than polished for another ten seconds.
Best with
Letter Rack works with two or more players. With four or more, common words get shared and the unique stars become the real prize, while two players make a quick head-to-head sprint.
Variations
- Pick 45 seconds for a sharper round, or 90 seconds while the group is still getting used to the rack.
- Require a minimum word length of four letters for a harder game.
- Let every player read their favorite word aloud at the end of each round.
FAQ
Can two players play?
Yes. Letter Rack needs at least two players, and everyone gets the same tiles, so a duel works as well as a bigger table.
Do I see other players' words during the round?
No. You only see your own words and how many words everyone else has found. Full word lists appear in the results.
How does the all-seven-tiles bonus work?
A word that uses all seven tiles earns 10 extra points. The rack is always built from a real seven-letter word, so that word is always there to find.
What happens to words nobody found?
The results also list valid words from the rack that nobody spelled, so you can see what you missed.
