One clue at a time — guess before the ladder runs out!

Signal Word turns a single secret word into a tense, escalating ladder of one-word hints. The Clue Giver has exactly three shots to steer the room toward the answer, and every guesser is stuck once they submit — so the tension isn't just guessing right, it's deciding whether to gamble early or wait and lose points.

Objective

The Clue Giver drops one 1-word hint at a time. Guessers race to call the secret word — the earlier the clue, the bigger the payout.

How to play

  1. At the start, one player is the Clue Giver and the rest are Guessers. The Clue Giver sees the secret word; no one else does.
  2. Each round, the Clue Giver writes one single-word hint that points to the secret word without saying it.
  3. After every clue, each Guesser may submit one guess. You can sit a clue out and wait for a stronger one — you get a fresh guess with each new clue.
  4. Up to 3 hints are revealed, one at a time. If nobody guesses by the final hint, the round ends with no winner.

Scoring

Points depend on which clue cracks the word: 5 each on Clue 1, 3 on Clue 2, 1 on Clue 3. Every Guesser who calls it on that clue earns the full amount, and the Clue Giver earns the same. If nobody guesses by Clue 3, the round ends and nobody scores. Speed bonus (host option): the fastest correct guesser gets +1.

Example round

  1. Ana is the Clue Giver and secretly sees the word 'umbrella'.
  2. Her first hint is 'rain' — vague on purpose, since guessing on hint one pays the most.
  3. Ben guesses 'puddle' immediately and locks in his single guess, wrong.
  4. Cleo waits. On hint two, 'fold', Cleo guesses 'umbrella' and gets it right.
  5. Cleo scores the mid-tier reward for guessing on the second hint, and Ana scores her Clue Giver points since someone guessed correctly before the ladder ran out.

Strategy tips

Best with

Works with 2 players as a team (one gives clues, the other guesses, roles swap each round, cracking the word on clue 1, 2 or 3 pays you both 5, 3 or 1 points, no speed bonus), and with 3 or more it becomes a meaningful Clue Giver/Guessers split that works well from a small friend group to a full party since the guessing is simultaneous and fast — a solid fit for a quick round between bigger games.

FAQ

Can I guess more than once per round?

No — once you submit a guess, you're locked in for that round; you can choose to wait for a later hint instead of guessing, but you don't get a second attempt after guessing wrong.

What happens if nobody guesses by the third hint?

The round ends with no winner and nobody scores, including the Clue Giver — the whole point is that the Clue Giver's hints have to actually land eventually.

Does guessing early always score more than guessing late?

Yes — correctly guessing on the first hint scores the most, and each later hint used is worth progressively less, so there's a real cost to waiting even when it feels safer.
